The Maypole Project's aim is to alleviate the stresses and strains experienced by families where a child is chronically ill through provision of emotional support and/or therapy which is tailored to each family and each individual's need. It is a professional, flexible, holistic, empowering, proactive, understanding, and ongoing service.
Every year between 12 and 17 children in 1000 will be diagnosed with an chronic illness., that is one which; threatens their life (such as cancer), shortens their life (such as cystic fibrosis), or where their illness/disability means that they are constantly returning to hospital. 60% of those affected by a child's diagnosis will reach out for emotional support.
Maypole family support is provided through a key worker who is placed with each referred family to help them create their own service "package". This may be befriending, counselling, groups, also information and advocacy. The services is provided to individuals, couples, whole families at a time and place to suit.
To support professionals working with these families we also provide supervision, debrief, consultancy, training and counselling.
